Tent Hire, Northern Suburbs

Two wind zones, not one. The coastal belt from Blouberg through Table View to Milnerton is the most exposed ground in the metro and the fabric works hard there, while inland Durbanville and Brackenfell are materially calmer. Newer suburbs also mean paving rather than lawn, so we ballast more often than we peg.

Coastal Northern Suburbs sites: the fabric is visibly working, and the anchoring has to work harder.

The wind gradient nobody warns you about

The Northern Suburbs are not one wind zone, they are two, and the line between them runs roughly along the N7. Get this wrong and you book the wrong structure.

Coastal — Table View, Blouberg, Milnerton, Sunningdale, Parklands. These are the most exposed sites in the metro for a tent. The south-easter comes in off the bay with nothing to break it from October through March. It builds through the afternoon — the same hours we are tensioning fabric. On these sites we pitch low, double the anchoring, and on the worst days we will tell you a frame tent is the safer structure than a stretch tent.

Inland — Durbanville, Brackenfell, Kraaifontein, Kuils River, Welgemoed. Materially calmer. The built environment and the rising ground break the wind before it gets there. Standard pitch, full choice of structure, and the flexibility to orient the tent for the view rather than for the weather.

Ground: this is newer suburb, so expect paving

Much of the northern belt is post-2000 development, and that has a direct consequence for us: small lawns and a lot of interlocking paving. On a 1990s Durbanville property we usually peg into a generous lawn. On a newer Brackenfell or Sunningdale plot there often isn't enough open grass, and we ballast onto paving instead — heavier load, more crew, and it needs to be on the quote rather than discovered on the day.

Access: security estates are the recurring problem

More of this area is behind a boom than anywhere else in the metro. Two things follow, and both need arranging before the day:

  • Vehicle authorisation. A bakkie and trailer needs to be on the gate list. Some estates want the registration and the driver's details 24–48 hours ahead.
  • Internal roads and turning circles. Estate roads are narrow and often have speed humps and tight corners. Tell us if the final approach is awkward — occasionally we bring a smaller vehicle and make two trips instead of one.

Northern Suburbs questions

Can you pitch a stretch tent in Table View in summer?

Yes, usually — pitched low and heavily anchored. On a badly exposed plot in a strong south-easter we will recommend a frame tent instead — we would rather change the structure than risk one.

My garden is mostly paved. Is that a problem?

No, but say so when you enquire. Paving means ballast weights rather than pegs, which changes the crew and the load, and it should be priced up front.

Do you deliver into security estates?

Yes, regularly. Get the vehicle onto the gate list ahead of the day and give us any restriction on delivery hours.

Tell us the date and the headcount

We come back with a firm, itemised figure — structure, delivery, pitching and strike, each priced separately so you can see what to trim. Quoting costs nothing.
