What Size Tent Do I Need?

A 100-seater tent for a sit-down dinner is about 10m × 16m (160 square metres), or 12m × 15m (185 square metres) once there is a dance floor. Nearly every tent-size guide online is American and quotes feet, which is no use here. This one is in metres, for South Africa, with local seating conventions, and it counts the things that are not guests: a dance floor takes 20 to 25 square metres, a bar another nine. That omission is why most tents end up too small.

Tent size & cost estimator

Work out the floor area you actually need — in metres — and roughly what that structure costs in Cape Town. Seating roughly doubles the area per guest, and the dance floor and bar are what most people forget.

The short answer, in metres

Almost every tent-size guide online is American and quotes feet, which is useless here. This one is metric and uses South African seating conventions.

The arithmetic, so you can do your own

Every number above comes from four figures. Use them and you can size any event.

LayoutFloor area per person
Standing / cocktail0.8 m²
Seated at long trestle tables1.3 m²
Seated at round tables1.6 m²
Theatre-style rows, no tables0.9 m²

Then add the things that are not guests:

  • Dance floor — 20–25 m² for up to 100 guests
  • Buffet or food station — 10–15 m²
  • Bar — 8–10 m²
  • Stage or DJ — 6–12 m²
  • Cake, gift and registration tables — 4–6 m²

Worked example. 100 guests, seated at round tables, with a dance floor and a bar: (100 × 1.6) + 22 + 9 = 191 m² — so a 12m × 15m or 12m × 16m structure. Not the 10m × 12m that “100 people” intuitively suggests.

The mistake almost everyone makes

Sizing for guests only. Seating roughly doubles the space per head versus standing, and then the dance floor, bar and buffet add 40–50 m² that nobody counted. That is how a tent that looked generous on paper ends up with the bar queue running through the dining tables.

Between two sizes? Go up

Go up. The cost difference between adjacent sizes is far smaller than the cost of a cramped event, and in the Cape an oversized tent gives you somewhere to move the whole party when the south-easter arrives.

American tent sizes, converted to metres

Most of the results you will find for this question are American and quote feet, so a 20×30 or a 40×60 means nothing here. These are the common US sizes in metres, with what each actually holds at South African seating densities.

US size (feet)In metresFloor areaStandingSeated at tables

20 × 406.1m × 12.2m74 m²9046

40 × 6012.2m × 18.3m223 m²275139
40 × 8012.2m × 24.4m297 m²370185

Standing is calculated at 0.8 m² a head and seated at 1.6 m² at round tables, the same figures used above. Subtract a dance floor, bar or buffet from the seated column before you commit to a size.

Tent size questions

What size tent do I need for 50 guests?

For 50 guests seated at round tables, 80 square metres — an 8m × 10m tent. Standing or at a cocktail layout, 40 square metres is enough, so 6m × 7m. Add a dance floor to the seated version and the working figure becomes 105 square metres, or 9m × 12m. A 6m × 9m stretch tent covers 50 standing guests and costs R1,500 to R2,500.

How many people will a 20x30 tent cover?

A 20×30 foot tent is 6.1m × 9.1m, or 56 square metres. That holds about 70 people standing, or 35 seated at round tables. Add a dance floor and it drops to roughly 20 seated.

How many people will a 20x40 tent fit?

A 20×40 foot tent is 6.1m × 12.2m, or 74 square metres — about 90 standing, or 46 seated at round tables before you allow for a bar or dance floor.

How many people can fit under a 30x50 tent?

A 30×50 foot tent is 9.1m × 15.2m, or 139 square metres. That is about 170 standing or 87 seated at tables, which makes it a comfortable 70-guest seated wedding once the dance floor and bar are counted.

How big of a tent do I need for a 200 person wedding?

About 320 square metres if guests are seated at round tables, so a 16m × 20m structure. With a dance floor, bar and buffet the working figure is closer to 345 square metres, or 18m × 20m. In feet that is roughly a 40×80.

What is the size of a 100 seater tent?

A 100 seater tent is 160 square metres, about 10m × 16m, when guests sit at round tables at 1.6 square metres each. With a dance floor and a bar the working figure is 185 square metres, or 12m × 15m. Standing only, an 80 square metre tent such as 8m × 10m is enough.

What is the standard tent size in metres?

There is no single standard, but the common event sizes here are 6m × 9m (54 square metres, about 30 seated), 10m × 12m (120 square metres, about 70 seated) and 12m × 15m (180 square metres, about 100 seated) in stretch tents. The table at the top of this page gives the size for any guest count from 50 to 250.

What size tent do I need for 100 guests in South Africa?

For 100 guests seated at round tables, 160 square metres — a 10m × 16m tent. Add a dance floor and a bar and it becomes 185 square metres, or 12m × 15m. Standing only, 80 square metres is enough.
