Tent hire Cape Town › Stretch Tent vs Marquee

Stretch Tent vs Marquee

Stretch tent if you want the view and the weather is probably fine; marquee if the event has to work whatever the weather does. Everything else is detail on that one trade. Compared directly on structure, interior, sides, weather, look, site and cost, with the Cape wind factor that usually settles it.

A curved stretch tent and a straight-sided framed marquee pitched side by side
Stretch tent left, framed marquee right — the same lawn, two very different structures.

The decision, in one line

Stretch tent if you want the view and the weather is probably fine. Marquee if the event has to work whatever the weather does. Everything below is detail on that.

Stretch tentMarquee
StructureTensioned fabric, poles and guy linesRigid frame or centre poles with a solid roof
InteriorCompletely open, no poles in the floorClear span on a frame; centre poles on a pole marquee
SidesUsually open; partial sides possibleFull sidewalls, up or down on the day
WeatherWaterproof; flexes in wind; cold in winterFully enclosable and heatable
LookModern, organic, informalFormal, symmetrical, a finished room when lined
SiteNeeds anchor points; adapts to slopes and odd shapesPrefers flat and regular; ballasts onto hard surfaces
CostLower for the same covered areaHigher, and lining adds roughly a third

Choose a stretch tent when

  • The setting is the point — vineyards, mountains, sea — and walls would waste it
  • It is October to April
  • The site is sloped, irregular, or has a tree in the middle of it
  • You want an open, relaxed feel rather than a formal room

Choose a marquee when

  • It is winter, or the event is at night and will get cold
  • You need a controlled interior — AV, staging, formal dinner service
  • You want it lined and dressed as a room
  • The forecast genuinely cannot be allowed to matter

The Cape-specific point. Rain is rarely the thing that ruins an outdoor event here — the south-easter is. Both structures are waterproof. Only one of them stops the wind, and on an exposed site between November and February that is the deciding factor, not the aesthetics.

Where the wind decides it outright: the pass funnel in the Helderberg pushes most exposed sites to a marquee, while the sheltered valleys of the Winelands leave the choice genuinely open.
